HUMAN HAIR PREPARATION
Most hair prieces should be washed and conditioned before it is placed on the client to remove any residue left from the manufacturing process. In addition, check the weft (the sewn band) for any unusual gaps or loose-ness. With wefted hair pieces, hair is doubled over and then sewn onto the weft. Therefore, silkier and straighter styles have a tendency to slip out. You can reinforce the weft by sewing through the loose areas of by applying a water proof adhesive (ie bonding glue) on the weft. This usually eliminates any shedding problems that might occur.
GENERAL CARE
The following are general recommendations that the professional can tailor to suit the needs of the client and specific weave or braid procedure.
Hair should be shampooed and conditioned regularly. Dirt, natural hair oils, styling residue, and sweat are agents that can tangle and mat the client's own hair. They will cause further problems for hair pieces. Although the cleanliness of the hair extension will prolong its use, clients should not clean it too frequently or with shampoos containing harsh detergents. Clients should also pay close attention to the scalp by cleaning it with witch hazel or a similar product that has mild astringent properties. Excessive use of styling products and head should also be avoided. These are elements that will shorten the "life" of the hair extension. The design is only half of the hair style; clients must condition their own hair underneath to prevent damage to their own hair.
The hair extensions should be gently detangled everyday using a metal or plastic wide tooth comb in the morning and before going to bed. Even more importantly, hair must be detangled before it is washed.
Never rub or massage the hair while washing; the shampoo water should just run through the hair. Also, while towel drying, merely seqeeze the water out from the extension. Do not rub or roll the hair in the towel.
While detangling dry hair, water should never be used alone on the extension. A solution of 1/4 conditioner and 3/4 water is an inexpensive way to make your own detangling solution. Otherwise, we recommend a good detangling solution that is applied before combing the hair every morning.
If curling or blow drying the extension, avoid any areas where heat sensitive adhesives have been used to place the extension. Also, when blow drying curly hair, we recommend the use of a diffuser.
Clients should also be advised to dry hair thoroughly before going to bed. Long extensions should be braided into one big braid and short hair tied in a scarf to prevent tangling as well as maintain style.
COLOR
Natural hair color is actually composed of many colors rather than the mono-toned color the eye may see. Clients with hair color other than black and dark brown will be more difficult to match with solid-tone extensions. You can solve this in a number of ways.
The easiest solution is to dye the client's hair to match the solid tone extensions.
If the client wants to avoid a chemical process, then the extension itself can be dyed to match the client's hair. This proactive is generally discouraged by most human hair manufacturers as the hair piece is already chemically processed. However, if the hair extension must be colored, dye extensions by depositing color from lighter to darker using a no or low peroxide colorant. A test strand should always be performed before the whole hair piece is dyed.
Two or more colors can be blended to match the client's hair color. This is probably the safest way for clients to either match their own hair color or add contrast. Hair Maintenance
